USC took advantage of some shaky Gardner-Webb pitching and a big day offensively from freshman center fielder Jim Fleming to knock off the Bulldogs 6-3. The Gamecocks trailed 2-1 in the third when GW starter Tim Huff hit 1B Bob Kleinknecht with a pitch, then loaded the bases on a single from Eddie Hill and a walk to pitcher Greg Ward. Huff then unleashed a wild pitch that scored Kleinknect. Huff was yanked, but reliever David Williams hit three straight batters and committed two balks in the fourth as Carolina took a 5-2 lead. Fleming doubled in a run as part of that rally USC added one more run in the seventh as Al Worthington singled, moved to third on a wild throw on a pickoff attempt and scored on a single by Eddie Hill. The Bulldogs tacked one more run in the ninth off reliever Bo Robinson, who pitched four solid innings. Fleming finished the day three for four while Hill also had two hits.
