A costly error led to the Gamecocks dropping game two of the day's doubleheader against N.C. State. After a Butch Anderson home run in the eighth sent the game into extra innings reliever Phil Houston took over for starter George Beam on the mound in the 13th. Wolfpack reliever Reid Carter opened the 14th with a single and moved to second on a bunt. State's Kelly Sparger then hit a ground ball to first where Bob Kleinknecht fielded it and flipped the ball to Houston covering first. Houston though dropped the toss and Carter came all the way around to score the winning run.
