The Gamecocks fell behind 3-0 in this one and were never able to come all the way back against Maryland starter Dick Reitz. The Terps scored all of their runs in the third off Melvin Quick, with the big hit being a two-run single by Pat Clarke. Carolina got within one run in the fifth on singles by Cleon Reece, Bob Ellenburg, Quick and Jim Hunter but didn't score any more after that. First baseman Ken Rosefield led USC in hits with two.
