In a game postponed by one day due to snow, USC opened a doubleheader featuring one game against North Carolina and one against N.C. State by defeating the Tar Heels 6-2. Starting pitcher Larry Erbaugh allowed hits to just three UNC batters while also scattering seven walks. The Gamecocks broke out to an early 6-0 lead when UNC starter Greg Pavlick walked five straight batters for two runs, followed by a 2-run double from Bill Petoskey and an RBI single by Erbaugh himself. The Tar Heels plated one run in the third on a walk, hit and ground out and one in the ninth on a solo homer by 1B Larry Kiser. The win was Erbaugh's third without a loss.
