Carolina fell behind 7-0 in the first three innings in this one as Yale pounded Gamecock starter Rich Grich but USC fought its way back for an 8-7 win. The Elis contributed by walking 14 Gamecock batters and Carolina scored two in the fourth and three in the seventh to get within striking distance. USC trailed 8-7 when backup 3B Ken Rhea, who had already driven in a run in the seventh in his first time up, drove a single into the gap. The hit scored two runners for the tying and winning runs.
