Game Site: Columbia, SC Game Synposis: (Associated Press) - Forward Tom Young's field goal with 15 seconds left sent Maryland on to a 53-49 victory over South Carolina here tonight in the opening basketball game in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Young flipped his one-handed shot in from just outside the foul circle to end a Maryland two-minute freeze of the ball with the score 49-49. Young then flipped in two free throws with three seconds left when he was fouled as South Carolina tried desperately to tie the score. Forwards Gene Shue of Maryland and Joe Smith of South Carolina tied for scoring honors with 19 apiece. Smith was more effective from the floor than Shue who built up his totals on seven free throws. South Carolina's ball-stealing, pass interceptings and rebounds kept it in the game all the way. The lead changed hands constantly and neither team ever had more than a four point edge.
