Ary was better known as a basketball player at USC, leading the Gamecock basketball squad in scoring in the 1943-44 season before joining the Navy. After his Naval career he enrolled at Stanford and had a long career as an executive before becoming Director of the Bureau of Mines under Presidents Reagan and Bush.
