Abebe made his way to USC originally as a non-scholarship athlete, his freshman year being funded by a U.S. government specialist in international disaster relief. Abeb competed in 83 matches in his Gamecock career. After struggling as a freshman, winning only six of 24 matches, Abebe settled in and won over fifty percent of his matches in his remaining three seasons.
