PAT WATSON Defensive Back 1967 / 1969 Myrtle Beach, SC

Biography

Watson earned national notice as a high schooler, being named to honorable mention list on Coach and Athlete Magazine’s National Top 100 senior players. He played quarterback in the 1966 North-South All-Star Game. He was moved to cornerback at USC and became a three-year starter for the Gamecocks. As a sophomore his top play was a 67-yard punt return for a touchdown that launched a comeback win over Virginia. He earned ACC Defensive Back of the Week honors after picking off four passes against Wake Forest in 1968. He also had a fumble recovery to set up a USC touchdown in a 32-27 win over UNC. In 1969 Watson would be one of the co-captains of the ACC championship squad, while earning All-ACC and All-State honors. He had another big game against Wake that year, picking off a pass and blocking an extra point. Watson coached at USC from 1970 through 1972 before leaving to take a post with the South Carolina Automobile Dealers Association.
