Biography

Whiteside was considered one of the catches of the 2003 recruiting class after he was named the Class AAA Player of the Year in 2002. He was also named all-state and Fox SportsNet put him on their All-South third team after catching 86 passes and 20 touchdowns as a senior at Greenville. He committed to USC over Clemson and Pittsburgh and was originally slated to redshirt but the coaching staff found his deep threat abilities too tempting. Whiteside had a huge game against Mississippi, catching passes of 33, 36 and 20 yards while scoring twice. He started five games in Lou Holtz’s final season while also returning punts, including a 43-yard return against Vanderbilt. He had a big spring in Steve Spurrier’s inaugural spring and won the Joe Morrison Award as the top performer on offense. Whiteside scored the first touchdown of the Spurrier era on a 49-yard pass from Blake Mitchell against Central Florida. He was injured against Tennessee and missed some time in the latter part of the season. The 2006 spring saw him excel again, winning the Most Improved Wide Receiver award, but then he was suspended for the first three games of the year. He came on late in the year, making 5 of his 8 receptions in the last two games.
