TED WINGARD
Quarterback
1964 / 1966
Greenwood, SC
Biography
One of the most highly touted prospects in the state, Wingard was named All-State at quarterback in both 1961 and 1962 while starring for Greenwood. He played in the 1963 North-South All-Star Game and signed on with the Gamecocks over Duke. He had already decided he would be studying pre-med at the university of his choice and reportedly doctors around the state wrote him to urge him to attend Carolina. Wingard did not see action as a sophomore while backing up senior Dan Reeves and junior Jim Rogers but won the starting job going into the 1965 season. He led USC to a 13-3 win over The Citadel while rushing for both touchdowns in the game. He started the next week against Duke but gave way to Mike Fair early in the game and did not start another game that season. Wingard came off the bench in relief of Fair against Memphis State and played well, hitting Johnny Gregory with a 40-yard pass and throwing a TD pass to Ben Garnto. He also started three games that year when Fair was injured, though Wingard himself went down against Florida State. He was inducted into the Greenwood High School Hall of Fame in 2005. Wingard has had a long career as a successful surgeon in the Jacksonville, Florida area.
