| A strong senior season saw Witherspoon earn Shrine Bowl and North-South All-Star Game berths for his performance at Lancaster. He was all-state in both 1969 and 1970 and was elected to the Lancaster High School Hall of Fame in 1974. Witherspoon became a three-year starter for the Gamecocks, nailing down a starting guard berth for the 1972 opener with Virginia and never looking back. He graded out the higest of all offensie linemen in USC’s 34-7 win over Memphis State in ’72. Witherspoon missed some of the 1973 season with an injury, including the game at Florida State He won the Black Spur award for best offensive line performance in the 1974 game against North Carolina. Witherspoon was a co-captain of the 1974 squad and was named All-State. He went on to a career in public service, including stints as finance directory for the city of Lancaster, business manager for Chester County schools and county administrator for Fairfield County. |
