CHRIS ALFORD
Wide Receiver
1992 / 1995
McBee, SC
Biography
A Shrine Bowl and honorable mention All-State selection in 1989 when he was played quarterback, kicker and defensive back at McBee, Alford threw for 25 touchdowns as a senior. He picked USC over N.C. State, Clemson and Indiand but injured his foot in an off-the-field accident the summer before his freshman year, leading to a redshirt. He saw limited time as a receiver in 1992 but emerged as one of the Gamecocks’ top kickoff coverage unit players, a role he would continue through the 1994 season. Alford took over as a starting receiver in 1993, making starts in seven games that year. His big catches that year were a 36-yarder against Kentucky and a 29-yarder against Arkansas. Alford also won the team’s Special Teams Player of the Year award in 1993 as in addition to his work covering kickoffs he blocked a punt against Vanderbilt. Alford was tried at free safety in the spring of 1994, but returned to receiver in the fall. His playing time was limited at receiver in 1994 and 1995 but he remained a top special teams player in ’94. He lives in Orlando now.
