Biography
Atwell was a player in the 1940 Shrine Bowl before enrolling at Presbyterian College. After serving as an Army Paratrooper during World War II (including fighting at the Battle of the Bulge) he transferred to USC in 1946. He was a reserve in 1946 but did throw a touchdown pass to Earl Dunham in the win over The Citadel that season. Atwell was the primary quarterback in 1947 and a had two-yard touchdown in the 21-19 victory over Clemson. Atwell was drafted by the Los Angeles Rams in 1947. He was responsible for convincing All-ACC fullback John Saunders to go to USC rather than North Carolina coming out of high school in Virginia. He lived in Portsmouth, Virginia and Tarboro, N.C. before passing away in 2002.
