Biography
The younger brother of former USC and NFL lineman Darrell Austin, Mark played in the Shrine Bowl in 1977 and was named All-State by the South Carolina Sportswriters Association. After redshirting in 1978 he played a good bit in 1979, splitting time at center with senior Quay Farr. Austin started every game as a sophomore in 1980 and went into fall camp in 1981 as the established starter. Unfortunately an elbow injury suffered on the first day of fall camp kept him out the first two games of the season, but he returned to start the rest of the year. Austin was held out of contact during 1982 spring practice after having off-season surgery on the elbow and it was hoped he could return as the starter in the fall, but recurring injury to the elbow and a knee injury wiped out his season.
