PAT TURNER Free Safety 1985 / 1989 Canton, GA |
Biography |
---|
Turner was an honorable mention All-State quarterback his senior season at Cherokee, where he often teamed up with future Gamecock WR Vic McConnell. He redshirted his freshman season, then competed in the spring of ’86 with classmate Todd Ellis for the starting quarterback job. Turner broke his collarbone in the spring game and had some problems with his shoulder in fall camp in ’86, but saw some playing time in relief of Ellis, with his most work coming in a win over East Carolina. He threw touchdown passes against the Pirates (39 yards to Hardin Brown) and Wake Forest (43 yards to Sterling Sharpe) while showing some good running ability as well. Turner decided to transfer to Georgia Tech after that season, but then changed his mind after one spring practice. Unfortunately that one spring practice meant he had to sit out the 1987 season. When Turner returned to the field in 1988 he was a free safety. He spent most of the season backing up all-star senior Ron Rabune, but did get a start against N.C. State. Turner moved to outside linebacker in 1989 when Sparky Woods took over and was contributing on defense, including a big fumble recovery at the N.C. State three yard line and an interception against Western Carolina. Todd Ellis’ injury against the Wolfpack though suddenly shifted Turner back to his old position, and he saw playing time at quarterback against North Carolina, Clemson and Florida State, with his longest completion being a 14-yarder to Skeets Thomas against the Tigers. |
