Biography
An All-State honoree as a senior at Dorman and a member of The Charlotte Observer’s Top 25 in South Carolina, Turnipseed picked USC over Georgia, N.C. State, North Carolina and Wake Forest. He redshirted in 1990 but saw a good bit of time in 1991 while backing up senior Bobby Brown at defensive end. His biggest play of the year may have been recovering a fumble by Georgia Tech QB Shawn Jones at the USC 11 in the fourth quarter of a 23-14 Carolina win. He also had tackles for loss in the North Carolina and Virginia Tech games. Turnipseed took over as a starter in 1992, starting all eleven games that year finishing eighth on the squad in tackles and third in quarterback hurries. One of his biggest plays that season was stuffing Mississippi State QB Greg Plump for a two-yard loss on 3rd and five at the USC 19 in the fourth quarter of Carolina’s upset of the top 25 ranked Bulldogs. Turnipseed got off to a good start in ’93, including recording 10 tackles, two sacks and three tackles for loss in the 23-21 win at Georgia. That performance earned him SEC Defensive Player of the Week honors, but a torn finger tendon cost him the last seven games of that season. He moved inside to defensive tackle as the Gamecocks switched to a 4-3 defense in his senior season. He had a sack and two tackles for loss in USC’s first ever bowl win (the 1995 Carquest Bowl over West Virginia) while finishing second on the team in quarterback hurries and tackles for loss. Turnipseed was also named Academic All-SEC as a senior. He lives in the Spartanburg area now.
