PHILLIP VICKERY
Linebacker
1978 / 1980
Spartanburg, SC
Biography
Vickery was a huge signing for the Gamecocks in 1978. He had been named All-State and played in the Shrine Bowl and The Poop Sheet (an early recruiting and sports magazine that covered the ACC area) rated him the number one prospect in South Carolina. Vickery picked Carolina over Tennessee after his senior year at Spartanburg. He suffered a shoulder injury (severely pulled tendons) in practices before the Shrine Bowl and redshirted his first season in Columbia. Vickery played with the junior varsity team in 1979 and worked as a reserve linebacker in 1980.
