CHRIS WADE Wide Receiver 1981 / 1984 Athens, GA |
Biography |
---|
Wade was twice named honorable mention All-State by the Atlanta Journal Constitution wihle at Oconoee County – as a junior in 1979 and then as a senior in 1980. He played in the Georgia North-South All-Star Game in 1981 before joining the Gamecocks. Wade joined played on the junior varsity team in 1981, quickly making a name for himself as a deep threat – he caught touchdown passes of 56 and 41 yards in a 28-19 win over the Georgia JV. He took over as the starting flanker as a sophomore and continued to show big play potential that season, averaging over twenty yards per reception (a feat he accomplished all three seasons on the varsity) while having a 100-yard receiving game against Georgia. Wade’s numbers dropped in 1983, but he bounced back with a solid senior season. He caught the game winner in the season’s opener, a 40-yard pass from halfback Quinton Lewis, to hold off an upset bid from The Citadel. Wade was also a key figure in the 45-21 win over Pittsburgh, catching TD passes of 31 and 33 yards. He was named the team’s offensive player of the week for that performance. Wade continued to split time at split end with Eric Poole through the rest of the ’84 season. |
