GREG WELCH Running Back 1985 / 1987 Hillcrest, SC

Biography

The Class AAA Back of the Year in 1984, Welch was a co-captain of that year’s Shrine Bowl squad before picking the Gamecocks over North Carolina and East Carolina. Welch rushed for 3,287 yards and 34 touchdowns in his high school career. He tantalized USC fans against East Carolina his freshman year when he ran for touchdowns of 15 and 55 yards in a 52-10 win over East Carolina. He suffered a knee injury against N.C. State and missed the last three games of 1985 and all of 1986. The knee affected him on and off in 1987 but he showed flases of his old form, especially in a two touchdown performance against Virginia. It looked he might be all the way back in the spring of 1988 when he rushed for 132 yards and two scores in the spring game, but in August 1988 he was declared academically ineligible for the season.
