Biography

A standout running back and safety at Belleview, Wells was second team all-state as a junior in 2001 and all-area and all-state in 2002. His older brother Kolby signed with Michigan as a linebacker in 2001. Wells picked the Gamecocks over South Florida and Central Florida. He had 13 interceptions, including a state-leading nine in 2000, and 18 punt returns for touchdowns in his high school career. Wells redshirted as a freshman and then was the top backup to senior Rod Wilson at the “Apache” position in 2004 while recording several tackles in special teams coverage. He started against Central Florida and Kentucky in 2005. He had 9 tackles, 2 for losses and a sack in the opener against UCF and forced a fumble against Kentucky. He suffered a knee injury against Arkansas and missed the last two regular season games. Wells started seven games as a junior and made two big plays in a close game against Wofford on the Terriers’ final drive – he had a sack and then later recovered a fumble and returned it 44 yards to ice the Gamecock win with 29 seconds left in the game. He also had tackles for loss against Arkansas, Kentucky and Mississippi State. Wells suffered a torn biceps injury and missed the last three games of 2006. As a senior he backed up Cliff Matthews at weak-side linebacker. He had 6 tackles in his final regular season game (vs. Clemson). A three-time SEC Academic Honor Roll member (2004 through 2006), Wells is now in sales in Ocala, Florida.
