TRAVELLE WHARTON
Offensive Tackle
2000 / 2003
Fountain Inn, SC
Biography
A Shrine Bowl player in 1998 when he played for former Gamecock QB Jay Feltz at Hillcrest High, Wharton picked the Gamecocks over Georgia and Clemson. He sat out the 1999 season while qualifying and stepped right in as the starter at left tackle as a true freshman. He started 10 games, missing the Florida and Clemson games with an ankle injury. He was named to the Freshman All-SEC team by The Sporting News and The Associated Press and was named to the True Freshman All-America team by Rivals.com. A sprained ankle kept him out against Arkansas in 2001 but Wharton started every other game for the next three years at left tackle. Wharton was awarded the Steve Sisk Award for the 2001 season as the team’s top blocker. He earned All-SEC honors from The Sporting News in 2002 and was second team All-SEC in 2003 according to the Associated Press. He was also a co-captain that season. He was a third round draft choice of the Carolina Panthers and started 99 games for the team between 2004 and 2011. He was named to the Pro Bowl in 2005.
