| Whitmire earned a series of honors as a high school senior, being named all conference, All-Western Carolina, All-State and playing in the Shrine Bowl. He picked the Gamecocks over Clemson, UNC, Tennessee and N.C. State. He was also selected for the North Carolina East-West All-Star Game. A groin injury suffered in fall camp ensured Whitmire took a redshirt season in 1989 and he left the team before the 1990 season. |
