DEL WILKES
Offensive Guard
1980 / 1984
Irmo, SC
Biography
Wilkes was an all-state offensive lineman for Irmo in 1979 and was named to the Shrine Bowl squad that year. He started two games at left guard after starter Joe Doyle was injured (against Pittsburgh and Kentucky). Wilkes sat out the 1982 season but returned in 1983 when Joe Morrison took over as coach and began the season backing up Cas Danielowski at right guard. Wilkes started in the latter part of that season after Danielowski went down with a dislocated elbow and was the starter full-time in 1984. He had a standout season as a senior, being named to four All-America teams (Kodak Coaches, Walter Camp, AP and UPI (2nd team) while also being named All-South Independent and winning the Jacobs Blocking Trophy as the top blocker in the state. Wilkes, a co-captain of the squad, was named MVP that year and was named to the modern era all-time USC team in 1993. He had a tryout with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1985 and the Atlanta Falcons in 1986. Wilkes went on to a career in professional wresting as “The Patriot” before retiring to the Irmo area.
