A highly honored quarterback at Mayo High School, Williamson was named a Parade All-American in 1975 as well as being named to the South Carolina Sportswriters All-State team in 1975. He caused a minor stir when he was selected to the Shrine Bowl but chose not to play, saying he wanted to concentrate on his role on the Mayo basketball team while also balking at the no facial hair rule the Sandlapper squad had. He made a splash in his first appearance in a Gamecock uniform - on the freshman team at USC - by scoring on a 95-yard kickoff return against the Georgia freshman team in 1976. |
