Biography
Williams was named Berkeley’s most outstanding player as a junior and followed that up with a strong senior season that earned him a Shrine Bowl berth, though a knee injury suffered in practice kept him out of that game. He played well for the freshman team in 1973 before working as Jay Lynn Hodgin’s top backup at the beginning of the ’74 season. Williams started four games that year and had his breakout game late in the season when he rushed for 105 yards and a touchdown in a loss to N.C. State. He took over as a starter the next season and had five 100-yard rushing games (Duke, Baylor, N.C. State, Appalachian State and Clemson) and scored twice against both Baylor and Clemson. He earned honorable mention All-South Independent honors that season while going over 1,000 yards rushing, as did his backfield mate Kevin Long. Named a captain of the 1976 team, Williams didn’t hit 1000 yards rushing but was used more as a receiver and caught a touchdown pass to beat Mississippi 10-7. He rushed for over 100 yards for the third year in a row against N.C. State while also adding 100 yard games against Virginia and Wake Forest. Williams was named to the South Carolina Sportswriters’ All-State team in 1976. He was drafted by the San Diego Chargers in the fifth round of the 1977 NFL draft, rushing for 1,327 yards over the next five seasons with a high of 752 in 1979, a season in which he also caught 51 passes. Williams also was with the Redskins in 1982. He passed away in 1994 and was inducted into the USC Sports Hall of Fame in 2008.
