CURTIS (COOTER) WILLIAMS Fullback 1965 / 1967 Bamberg, SC |
Biography |
---|
Williams played in the 1964 North-South All-Star Game (played in August 1964) after leading Bamberg to a 13-0 record and the 1963 state championship as a senior. The quarterback of that team, he was one of three future Gamecocks (along with Ron Bunch and Danny Bonds) in a backfield called “The Four Horsemen”. Williams was also a standout pitcher in baseball. He started some at wingback in 1965, with his best game being against The Citadel but also picked up 27 yards on nine carries against The Citadel. In 1966 he moved to fullback where he backed up Jim Mulvihill, though a knee injury suffered in the spring sidelined him a good bit that year, especially after it was re-injured in the practice before the season opener with LSU and on a kickoff return against Tennessee. Williams played halfback and fullback in 1967, officially being listed behind Benny Galloway at left halfback. He scored touchdowns that year against Iowa State and Maryland. Williams went on to a career in education and became prinicipal of Richard Carroll Primary School in Bamberg. |
