PAUL WILLIAMS
Defensive End
1980 / 1981
Darlington, SC
Biography
From an athletic family where two brothers – Toney (Clemson) and Bernard (North Carolina Central) – played college football, Williams was an all-state player at Mayo High School. He began his career as a walk-on at Clemson in 1978 but transferred to USC in 1979 after the Tigers switched coaches from Charley Pell to Danny Ford at the end of the ’78 season. He sat out that year then joined the team as a defensive end in 1980 and split time with Karey Johnson at right end. When the Gamecocks were invited to the Gator Bowl that season Williams earned the rare distinction of suiting up for that bowl for two different schools. He suffered a concussion against Georgia that year and missed The Citadel game.
