STEPHANE WILLIAMS Cornerback 1985 / 1989 Laurens, SC

Biography

One of the top defensive backs in the state in 1984, Williams was named all-state and played in the North-South All-Star Game in both football and baseball that year. He redshirted in 1985 and saw minimal time in 1986 backing up Chris Major at cornerback before becoming of ot the leaders on the Gamecock special teams units in 1987. In 1988 Williams took over as a starting cornerback. He made a big play against East Carolina – with USC up 3-0 the Pirates had the ball at the Gamecock 3 when they fumbled and Williams came up with the ball. Williams was viewed as Carolina’s best and most experienced defensive back going into 1989 and so was moved to free safety to quarterback the secondary. He helped preserve a win in Sparky Woods’ first game by picking off a pass against Duke. That season he recovered a blocked punt for a touchdown in the 27-20 winat North Carolina. Williams is now a captain in the Laurens County Sheriff’s Department.
