GENE WILSON
Halfback
1951 / 1953
Fayetteville, NC
Biography
After winning a state championship at Fayetteville High as a senior Wilson backed up Steve Wadiak and Bobby Drawdy at halfback his sophomore season and had a two-touchdown game against Virginia that year. He took over as a starter in ’52 and had one of the highlights of the season when he caught a 19-yard touchdown pass from Johnny Gramling for the only score. Wilson set up the score by recovering a Tiger fumble. He earned all-state honors for his performance that year. In 1953 he again struck against Virginia, as he rushed 69 yards for a touchdown in a 31-0 win. Wilson was named 2nd team all-state in 1953; among his other exploits that year were a 37-yard scoring reception against Wofford; he had a 32-yard run on the scoring drive that beat Clemson 14-7 and a 17-yard touchdown run in a win over North Carolina. He was a captain in 1953. Wilson was drafted in the 11th round by the Washington Redskins but released in training camp. He was signed by the Toronto Argonauts of the CFL and rushed for 708 yards and seven scores as a rookie. A CFL All-Star that season, he served in the military in 1955 and ’56 before playing briefly for both the Argos and the Montreal Alouettes in 1957. He lived in Fort Mill later in life, operating his own packaging and fastener system business before passing away in April of 2010.
