ROD WILSON Strong Safety 2000 / 2004 Cross, SC

Biography

Wilson was named honorable mention All-Lowcountry as a junior at Cross in 1998 before becoming one of the most highly recruited players in South Carolina in 1999-2000, Wilson chose the Gamecocks over Penn State, Clemson and Iowa. He was named All-Lowcountry in 1999 by the Charleston Post and Courier and was a finalist for Mr. Football while also co-captaining the South Carolina Shrine Bowl squad. Wilson played in the fourth quarter against New Mexico State in 2000, rushing four times and throwing one pass, but ended up redshirting that season. He played quarterback in the spring of 2001 but then shifted to wide receiver and caught one pass that year while playing in nine games. Wilson was moved to defense during spring of 2002 and had a solid season on special teams and as a reserve safety. Wilson took over as a starter in 2003, winning the team attitude award that spring. He started the season well, with 3 tackles, a pass breakup and a forced fumble in the season opener against Louisiana-Lafayette but then cracked ribs and an ankle injury kept him out of four games. Wilson started in 2004 at the “apache” position, a hybrid linebacker-safety position and led the team in tackles, quarterback hurries and fumble recoveries. He had 11 tackles and a pass breakup in the 35-32 win over Arkansas. Wilson was Academic All-SEC in 2004. He was drafted in the 7th round in 2005 by the Chicago Bears and played three seasons with them, then did a second tour of duty in the Windy City in 2010 and ’11. In between he played two seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaners.
