Biography
One of several Gamecocks to come from the Benedictine program (coached by Womble's fellow offensive lineman Jim Walsh’s father), Womble earned all-city honors as a senior. He spent his first several years at Carolina as a backup center behind Mark Austin. When injuries hit the line in 1983 Womble was moved to left tackle, but then went down with an injury himself after moving into the starting lineup. He took over as the full-time starter at left tackle in 1984 and made one of the big offensive plays of the season at Notre Dame. With the Gamecocks trailing 26-14, quarterback Mike Hold was about to get hit for a 10 yard loss around the USC 30 but chose to lateral the ball to Womble, who rumbled forward to turn a loss into a seven yard gain. He was named All-State by the South Carolina Sportswriters’ Association at the end of the year, the same group who named him co-Offensive Player of the Week for his role in the rout of Kansas State that season. Womble is now the chief financial officer for Mustard Seed Ministries.
