Biography

The graduation of three-year starter Mike Fair left the quarterback spot open for a battle between Yoakum and classmate Tommy Suggs in 1968. Yoakum was the better passer, while Suggs was a better runner and viewed as better and handling the signal calling responsibilities. Yoakum won the job to begin the year and started each of the first two games but lost the job to Suggs when he came off the bench to lead a fourth quarter comeback win over North Carolina. He started two more games (N.C. State and Virginia) but gave way to Suggs in each. He spent the following year as Suggs’ backup but saw action in seven games, throwing TD passes against Florida State, Tennessee and Georgia. Yoakum was passed on the depth chart by sophomores Tommy Rhodes and Jackie Young his senior season.
