JACKIE YOUNG Quarterback 1970 / 1972 Chesapeake, VA

Biography

A record setting signal caller at Deep Creek, where he was named All-Tidewater in 1968 and had 41 career touchdown passes and 3,820 passing yards. Young began the 1970 season as the top backup to Tommy Suggs, but Suggs missed time in several games with injuries, setting up some heroics for Young. The first big game saw him come off the bench to hit tight end Doug Hamrick for USC’s only score in a 7-7 tie with N.C. State. His best work was still to come, though, as he replaced an injured Suggs with the game tied 7-7 against Virginia Tech. Young threw for 130 yards and led USC to a 24-7 victory over the Hokies. He repeated the feat the next week, as he hit Jim Mitchell with a 50-yard pass to set up the tying score against UNC and then threw a TD pass to Hamrick as the Gamecocks won 35-14. He was considered the favorite to replace Suggs and started the 1971 season opener against Georgia Tech but was pulled after throwing two interceptions in his first six attempts. Young would throw only one more pass that season, an interception the next week against Duke. He was switched to flanker when Mike Haggard went down with an injury. Young returned to quarterback in the spring of ’72 and entered the season as the top backup to Virginia transfer Bill Troup. He saw his only action when Troup went down with an injury against Georgia Tech. After graduation Young became a dentist and sadly passed away early at the age of 44 in 1996 while living in Rockingham, N.C. At the time of his death he was still the all-time passing leader at Deep Creek High School.
