Biography
One of the early heroes of Gamecock football, Zobel made an impact right away as a sophomore. He scored both touchdowns in USC’s season opening 13-7 win over Erskine College in first varsity game in 1927. Two weeks later he was again the central figure, as Carolina defeated Virginia 13-12 between Zobel’s 75 yard pass reception for a touchdown and an interception on defense to stop the Cavaliers’ final drive. Continuing his heroics, Zobel came off the bench (he was fighting an illness) to throw a 33-yard touchdown to Emmett Wingfield to account for the only points in a 6-0 win over The Citadel that season. Despite not playing in the first half and then getting knocked out of the game in the third quarter Zobel found time to complete 4 of 5 passes for 66 yards and rushed twice for 7 yards. In 1928 Zobel suffered a severe ankle injury during the Clemson game that cost him the next three games. That season Zobel again almost single-handedly destroyed Virginia, as he caught two passes for TDs and returned a punt 65 yards for a score in a 24-13 win over UVA. He continued his fine play through his senior season, his heroics including a 60 yard interception return for a touchdown in a 26-0 rout of Maryland.
