Game Summary
In one of the great comebacks in USC history, the Gamecocks stunned a home Tar Heel crowd by rallying in the fourth quarter from a 27-3 deficit to win 32-27. Little went right for USC in the first half, even when they made a play. A perfect example came when UNC kicked off leading 10-0 and Gamecock DB Don Bailey got loose on a long kickoff return from the end zone. Unfortunately after 90 yards Bailey was dragged down at the Tar Heel 10. The offense was unable to move the ball and Butch Genoble missed a 16 yard field goal to leave a zero on the scoreboard for USC. Things looked bleak when the final quarter started and USC trailed by 24. On the first play of the fourth quarter Tommy Suggs hit Fred Zeigler with an 18-yard pass for a touchdown. On the ensuing kickoff UNC star halfback Don McCauley fumbled and USC's Pat Watson recovered at the Tar Heel 24. Suggs hit TE Doug Hamrick for 20 yards and Warren Muir scored from the four on the next play to cut the lead to 27-17 after Suggs ran for the two point conversion. USC forced a three and out, then Suggs hit Hamrick for 14 and Rudy Holloman for 33, setting up another Muir touchdown. Suggs passed to Holloman for the two pointer and suddenly the Gamecocks were within two with ten mintues still to go. USC forced another punt and backup quarterback Randy Yoakum hooked up with Eddie Bolton for 37 yards to the UNC six. Two plays later Suggs rushed for a four yard touchdown and USC led 32-27. USC stopped the last two Tar Heel possessions, giving up just 32 yards, then Suggs took a knee twice for the huge comeback win. ;
