Game Summary
Sophomore Tommy Suggs passed his way into the Carolina record book, throwing a school record five touchdown passes in a 49-28 win at Virgnia. The 5-9 quarterback from Lamar had already been part of twice breaking the school record for passing yardage in a game (vs. Maryland originally, then 324 vs. Florida State). His lead receiver, Fred Zeigler, also set school records by catching 12 passes for 199 yards against the Cavaliers. Also going in the record books in this game was kicker Billy DuPre, who broke the ACC record for most extra points in game with seven. The Gamecocks got out to an early 14-0 lead behind a first quarter touchdown pass of 20 yards from Suggs to Zeigler and a second quarter 29-yard touchdown run by halfback Rudy Holloman. Virginia stormed back to tie the score behind two touchdown passes from Gene Arnette, but USC retook the lead just before half on a 19-yard touchdown from Suggs to Zeigler. The second half saw Carolina take control, as Suggs opened the third by hitting Benny Galloway for a 43-yard touchdown to make it 28-14. Virginia would counter to cut it to 28-21, but Suggs and Galloway teamed up again, this time for 62 yards and a 35-21 lead. Arnette would throw his third touchdown pass in the fourth quarter to again get Virginia within a score, but Suggs threw a 16 yard pass to Zeigler for the duo's third touchdown combination on the day and backup quarterback Randy Yoakum ran for a touchdown to close out the scoring. The USC defense, while giving up 240 yards and three scores to Arnette also picked him off four times and held UVA star tailback Frank Quayle to just 29 yards on 15 attempts. The win improved USC's record to 2-5 on the year and gave the sophomore-laden youthful team a much needed boost.;
