Game Summary
Carolina scored the most points scored to date in the USC-Clemson rivalry, as they pounded the Tigers 56-20. USC rolled up 616 yards of offense, much to the displeasure of Tiger coach Red Parker, especially Carolina threw a 19-yard touchdown pass with 54 seconds left. 'I read it as an insult and I'll never forget it' said Parker after that game. The Gamecocks started with the big plays early in this one as Clarence Williams got the first score with a 37-yard touchdown run on the game's first possession. The second one didn't go any better for Clemson, as Carolina marched 82 yards in eleven plays, the first ten of which were on the ground. Jeff Grantz finished the drive with a 34-yard touchdown pass to Randy Chastain and a 14-0 lead. Clemson got on the board early in the second with a short TD run by QB Mike O'Cain, but Carolina bounced right back. USC went 70 yards to make the lead 21-6 with a 9-yard touchdown run by Williams. Clemson went three and out and Carolina rolled to another score. A 19-yard run by Grantz put USC in the red zone and he hit Phillip Logan for a 13-yard touchdown to finish things off. Another three and out for the Tigers put Carolina in position for one more score as the half ended and the offense didn't disappoint the home crowd. A 41-yard pass from Grantz to Logan accounted for the points and a 35-6 lead. The Tigers would score first in the second half on a pass from O'Cain to Joey Walters to make it 35-12 but then Grantz would hit Kevin Long for a three yard TD to make it 42-12. Grantz finished off the quarter's scoring with a 19-yard run to push the lead to 49-12. O'Cain opened the fourth with a touchdown run and it looked like that would be all the scoring for the day, but Grantz couldn't pass up a fifth scoring pass, hitting Stevie Stpehens from 19 yards out with 54 seconds remaining for a final 56-20 score. Grantz finished the day with 122 yards rushing and 158 passing while accounting for six touchdowns.;
