| South Carolina improved to 3-0 by stifling a Duke team that had just upset Tennessee in their season opener. USC held the Blue Devils to 95 yards rushing on 43 carries and just 87 passing yards while also overcoming the loss of starting quarterback Ron Bass to a minor knee injury. Kevin Long scored on a three-yard run to cap the Gamecocks' first possession of the game and Britt Parrish added a 28-yard field goal to push the lead to 10-0 in the first quarter. The Blue Devils would the lead to 10-6 in the second quarter on a touchdown run by tailback Art Gore and the half would end there. Bass went down on the half's final drive, turning the game over to Swinehart, a freshman from Ohio. His big moment came on the second half's first drive when Swinehart kept the ball on an option play and raced 57 yards to the Duke one. Swinehart went over from the one on the next play to expand the lead to 24-6. The defense held from there, as the generated three turnovers, an interception by Tim Singleton and fumble recoveries by Lance Garrett and Russ Manzari. ; |
