Playing on the road in The Big House, the Gamecocks stunned an Ann Arbor crowd by coming back from an 11 point deficit to stun Michigan 17-14. Carolina scored first on an Eddie Leopard 26 yard field goal, but then the Wolverine passing duo of QB John Wangler and wide receiver Anthony Carter got cranked up and combined for two touchdown passes in the second quarter. Wangler found Carter for a nine yard score, then a few minutes later connected again for a three yard touchdown. USC wouldn't get on the scoreboard again until the third quarter, when Carolina mounted an 80-yard drive that ended with a 2-yard run by George Rogers to cut the lead to 14-10. Michigan gambled on their next possession, trying a fake punt on 4th and one, but USC stuffed them for no gain and took over at the UM 29. A seven play drive ended with Johnnie Wright scoring from the one for a three point Gamecock lead. The end got frantic, as Michigan drove to the Carolina three. USC's Hal Henderson sacked Wangler on third down for a seven yard loss and Chuck Finney's coverage resulted in an incomplete pass to Carter on the Wolverines' last play. Rogers was the star of the game, rushing for 142 yards, while on defense LB Walt Kater had a fumble recovery and cornerback Mark Bridges interceped a pass. The win improved USC's record to 3-1
