Game Summary
USC was 2-0 in the Taneyhill era, but were hosting #16 Tennessee, a school the Gamecocks had only beaten once before and that was in 1903. The Vols had reached #4 in the nation that year behind QB Heath Shuler but had struggled recently and stood at 5-2. The first ten mintues passed without a score, and Carolina started a drive at their own 10. Running back Terry Wilburn ripped off runs of nine, 13 and 15 yards to start the drive and then Brandon Bennett picked up 29. Two plays later Taneyhill dumped a pass of to running back Mike Reddick who went the distance for a 22-yard touchdown. Tennessee cut the lead to 7-3 with a John Becksvoort field goal with just over nine minutes left in the first half and then took the lead behind a Mose Phillips touchdown run four mintues later. Unfazed, Taneyhill drove USC 80 yards in four minutes, with a 14-yard pass to Asim Penny, 11 to Toby Cates and 23 to Boomer Foster paired with an 8 yard run by Rob DeBoer and 13 yards on the ground by Bennett before Bennett scored to make 14-10 at the break. The Vols would score first in the second half as a 15-yard run by Heath Shuler made it 17-14 UT. USC kicker Marty Simpson tied the game on the first play of the fourth quarter with a 38-yard field goal and the next Carolina got the ball they put together a 15 play 79 yard drive to take the lead, finishing with a 3-yard pass from Taneyhill to Cates. Things looked shaky when USC got stopped at its own 10 with two and a half to go, but Simpson nailed a 55-yard punt to give the defense some breathing room.Unfortunately Shuler hit three passes in a row, the last being a 39-yard touchdown to James Stewart to make it 24-23. Johnny Majors decided to go for two and the win with the clock down to 88 seconds. Shluer found Stewart in the right flat and it looked he would get in for the game winner but suddenly linebacker Hank Campbell halted his momentum and safety Norman Greene came in to finish things off and preserve the win.;
