Game Summary
The week after scoring 77 on Kent State Carolina broke the sixty point mark for the third time in 1995 by laying 65 points on Mississippi State in a 65-39 win at Starkville. Steve Taneyhill set a new school record with 473 passing yards as he shredded the Bulldog defense while completing 38 of 44 passes. Carolina actually trailed in this one 7-0 early, but immediately after falling behind drove 71 yards for the tying score, as six Taneyhill completions moved the offense down the field and Stanley Pritchett finished the drive off with a 5-yard touchdown run. State went three and out and Taneyhill completed six straight passes to move from the USC 14 to the MSU 18. Duce Staley took it in from there and Carolina ended the first quarter up by seven. An interception by Arturo Freeman on State's first possession of the second quarter set up yet another USC score, this one a one-yard run by Pritchett. MSU cut it to 21-14, but Taneyhill hooked up with Staley on a 20-yard touchdown pass to push it right back to a two touchdown lead. The Bulldogs looked like they might end the half with some momentum as they were just outside the SC red zone with time running down, but Aubrey Brooks stuffed Keffer McGee for no gain on third down, forcing a field goal. Just to ensure USC stayed in control the Gamecocks used the remaining 84 seconds to mount an 80 yard drive, finishing with a 10-yard TD from Taneyhill to Pritchett. The second half was a complete scoring frenzy, as Staley scored two touchdowns in the third quarter (one receiving, one rushing) and Steve Florio added a field goal for a 51-23 lead. USC would score two more times in the final period, as Taneyhill threw a TD pass to Zola Davis and Pritchett scored for the fourth time on the day on a six yard run. The 24 points scored by Pritchett established a new school record.;
