Game Summary
In a game that sealed the fate of Tennessee coach Phil Fulmer, the Gamecocks showed that it was clearly they who were a program on the rise and the Vols were on the decline. USC scored first, after an Eric Norwood & Jordin Lindsey sack stopped a Tennessee possession. Carolina drove 82 yards in five plays, with freshman QB Stephen Garcia doing the damage. Garcia hit Kenny McKinley for 19 yards on the first play, then found McKinley for 18 and Eric Baker for 31 more. After a short run by Garcia he hooked up with Mike Davis for a twelve yard touchdown and a 7-0 lead. The next three UT possession resulted in two three-and-outs and an interception by Stoney Woodson as the Gamecock defenders swarmed QB Nick Stephens. Woodson returned his pick 68 yards for a touchdown to push the lead to 14-0. Jonathan Crompton then relieved Stephens, but he too went 3 and out. The next Vol drive saw RB Lennon Creer fumble, forced by Travian Robertson and picked up by Captain Munnerlyn, who took it back 38 yards to the UT four. It took just one play to score again, as Garcia found McKinley for a four yard touchdown pass. The remaining forty mintues were pretty even as each team scored six points. Ryan Succop added a field goal to make it 24-0 before Arian Foster scored on a one-yard run. Succop added one more field goal in the final period for the 27-6 final tally. Fulmer would be fired at the end of the year.;
