1966 - USC rode the shoulders of forward Al Salvadori to a win over in-state rival Clemson, as the 6-9 West Virginia native scored eight points in six minutes in a 57-48 win. The Gamecocks held Tiger star Randy Mahaffey to just five points in the first half though Clemson jumped out to an early 10-4 lead. Carolina would take its first lead behind a four point run from Earl Lovelace and Jack Thompson that put USC up 23-22. Points from Frank Standard and Lyn Burkholder ensured the Gamecocks were up at the half, as the score stood 28-24 at the break. USC stretched the lead out to 34-24 early in the second but Clemson mounted a comeback and drew within 43-42 before Salvadori stepped to the fore. Mahaffey twice got Clemson within one, but Salvadori, Thompson and Standard each took a turn pushing the lead back to three before Salvadori did it one more time and the Gamecocks pulled away. Carolina's record stood at 6-1 after winning their ACC opener.
