1985 - USC stunned #3 Memphis State 60-58 behind a physical effort that saw the Gamecocks win the rebounding battle 44-29 despite Memphis having the conference's #1 and #3 rebounders (Keith Lee and William Bedford). The visiting Tigers were ahead 12-7 after the first six minutes, but then went scoreless for the next seven minutes as USC scored eleven straight points. During that stretch Memphis missed nine shots and turned the ball over three times. That gave Carolina an 18-12 lead and USC would never trail again. The Gamecocks' strong performance on the offensive boards helped them to a 30-21 halftime lead. The Gamecocks pushed the margin to eleven and kept it there through much of the second half until MSU All-American Keith Lee helped drive a run that cut the lead to four with just three minutes left. On USC's next trip down the floor Carolina missed their first two shots but center Mike Brittain snared the rebound and slammed it home and the Tigers would never get any closer. Duane Kendall led USC with 13 rebounds while Brittain and Linwood Moye added 10 each. Scoring wise Moye, Brittain and Keith James led the way with fourteen points each.
