1975 - The Gamecocks and Arizona State participated in a great CWS pitching duel, as USC's Tim Lewis and ASU's Greg Cochran matched goose eggs on the scoreboard for seven innings. The Sun Devils would break through first, as they brought a run home on a triple by future Atlanta Brave Jerry Maddox. Carolina went into its final at-bat facing Cochran, a starter who hadn't lost (14-0) that season.Undeterred, Mark Van Bever led off the final inning with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice by Jeff Grantz. Garry Hancock's single scored Van Bever, and USC then loaded the bases on a single by Hank Small and a walk to Steve King. Hancock scored on an ASU error, Jim Pankovits brought another run home with a ground out and the final run scored on a squeeze bunt by Steve Cook. Lewis then blanked the Sun Devils in the ninth, sending Carolina into the championship game against Texas.
