1958 - The Gamecocks traveled to Athens for the first time since 1941 to take on a Georgia squad that was reeling following losses to Texas and Vanderbilt to open the season. USC, 1-1 themselves afer opening the year with an upset of Duke before falling to Army, would add to the Bulldogs' misery on this day. Just six minutes into the game USC's Alex Hawkins intercepted a Georgia pass and returned it 45 yards for a score, then threw a pass to King Dixon for the two point conversion to go up 8-0. A USC punt early in the second quarter would deepen the hole as Georgia returner Gene Littleton fumbled and Carolina's Jimmy Duncan recovered at the UGA 19. John Saunders would take advantage of the short field and score on a 3-yard run. Another two point conversion, this time Dixon throwing to Hawkins, made it 16-0. Georgia scored late in the second to make it 16-8. Quarterback Bobby Bunch added a touchdown in the fourth and a late long pass from UGA QB Charley Britt to George Guisler accounted for the 24-14 final. Hawkins, who led the team in rushing and receiving in addition to his standout defensive play, drew praise from coach Warren Giese. 'He's as fine an all-around halfback as there is in the nation.'
