1970 - The Gamecocks got two touchdown runs from Tommy Simmons and quarterbacks Tommy Suggs and Jackie Young each threw a touchdown pass as USC traveled to Chapel Hill and knocked off UNC 35-21. The Tar Heels scored first, thanks to a 48-yard touchdown run by Don McCauley but that would be the last time UNC would lead in the game. Tyler Hellams intercepted a pass by future ACC commissioner Johnny Swofford and the Gamecocks then marched 63 yards to tie the score. Simmons finished the drive with his first touchdown, a two-yard run. The Tar Heels punted with about nine and a half mintues left in the first half, but USC's Dickie Harris took the ball at his own three and went 97 yards to go up 14-7. Coach Paul Dietzel pulled out a little trickery before the end of the half - as USC faced 4th and one at the UNC 10 they lined up for a field goal, but Billy Ray Rice took the fake and rushed five yards to set up first and goal. Two plays later Simmons scored again from the two and it was 21-7 Gamecocks. UNC's Ike Oglesby rushed for a touchdown in the third to pull it to 21-14 and midway through the fourth UNC tied the game on a TD run by McCauley. The Gamecocks took control at this point, as Young hit Jim Mitchell on a 50-yard pass to get to the UNC six and then he connected with Doug Hamrick from the three to go up 28-21. On UNC's next possession the Gamecocks' all-time interception leader, Bo Davies, picked off a pass and gave USC the ball at its own 36. After a loss of one on first down, Rice rumbled 65 yards for the touchdown to put the game away at 35-21. Davies would also kill the Tar Heels' final possession with another interception. USC just missed having a 100-yard receiver and 100-yard rusher as Mitchell finished with 107 receiving but Rice finished just short with 91 yards.
