Akin was a member of the Grady 1953 state championship squad coached by future Georgia assistant and Georgia Southern head coach Erk Russell. He also played in the GACA North-South All-Star Game the summer before his freshman year at USC. A reserve tackle for two seasons with the Gamecocks, Akin went on to have a long career in high school coaching. He served as the head football coach at Spartanburg and at Knoxville (TN) Webb, and as head track coach at Ooltewah (TN) (1977-81, 1988-2000) and Chattanooga (TN) The McCallie School. |
