Watson had a great career at Clinton, being named Class AAA Lineman of the Year as both a junior and a senior. He was also All-State both years and played in the 1976 North-South All-Star Game (he was named to the Shrine Bowl but missed it because Clinton was still playing in the playoffs). As a true freshman Watson backed up senior Bubba Shugart at middle guard, though he missed some time due to an injury suffered against N.C. State. He took over as the starter in 1977 and was one of the defensive stars of a 19-16 win over East Carolina that year; news accounts describe Watson recording several tackles by jumping over the center at the snap and making a tackle in the backfield. He backed up Bill Janus at middle guard in 1978 and Fred Sinclair in 1979, recording six tackles in the season finale against Clemson. He lives in Columbia currently. |
